Benedictine Monastery & Show Cheese factory
The Benedictine Monastery has left its mark on the village since its building in 1120. Even today the imposing building attracts thousands of visitors every year.
Guided tours of the monastery are available.
Switzerland’s largest church organ, the monumental Collegiate Library, the Valley Museum, a show dairy and a manor house are all noteworthy attractions of this tour.
The show Cheese Factory is the only cheese factory in Switzerland within the walls of a monastery, where you can watch cheese being produced by hand. Watch how four large vats of milk get transformed into the famous ‘Engelberger Klosterglocke’—a mild cheese pressed into the shape of a monastery bell. Thanks to this unique manufacturing process, the local cheese is produced all year round.
In the shop’s restaurant visitors can enjoy a variety of cheese platters, delicious fondues and several tasty desserts. To remind you of your visit, unique souvenirs and regional food specialties can also be purchased here.
